It is almost time to ring in the new year, but before we do so, it is important to make sure that our home is also ready for January. If you haven’t had a chance to check your home maintenance items, here’s your chance to do so.
Let's Get Your Home Winter-Ready
First, let’s start with the most important items, aka cannot be delayed another month, as we want to avoid any costly damage. The temperature is already at the freezing point, so those items must be done as soon as possible.
☐ Unhook and store hoses, turn off any outdoor water valve. Insulate if needed during the winter months
☐ Service the heating system
☐ Inspect and clean the chimney and stove
☐ Store window screens
☐ Walk around the property and inspect for cracks. Seal any foundation cracks to avoid water infiltration over the winter.
☐ Adjust the air exchanger (20/40, between 30% and 40%)
Then we have our home check-up to ensure that we don’t deal with any issues in the wintertime and in the spring. It isn’t only about the maintenance of your home but also your safety and health.
☐ Clean the dryer vent (indoor and outdoor to prevent fires)
☐ Clean the heat-pump filter and air exchanger filter.
☐ Reverse the ceiling fan direction (to save on the hydro bill)
☐ Check the weatherstripping on doors and windows. Replace if needed.
☐ Inspect handrails and steps for safety
☐ Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, especially if you start your car in the garage on cold days!
Got Ice dams on the roof?
Note that if you have snow on your roof, it will be even easier for you to determine whether or not you are going to need some extra insulation in your attic. Take a look at any melted spots and ice dams; they are a good indicator that you are losing heat through your attic and roof. Take a look at the graphic below to understand what ice dams are and how they can damage your home considerably.
By completing your list and ♫checking it twice♪, you will have peace of mind all winter long and ring in the new year the right way: without any home repairs that will break the bank.
Happy Holidays!
