1. Plan Ahead

The foundation of a successful move is thorough planning. Start by creating a moving checklist that outlines all tasks, from packing to hiring movers.

  • Declutter: Before packing, take time to declutter your belongings. Donate, sell, or discard items you no longer need. This will reduce the volume of items to move and make unpacking more manageable.

  • Purchase the essentials: Do you have enough bins, boxes, duct tape, bubble wrap and fragile labels for all your belongings? Our recommendation for the bubble wrap is to purchase at the Dollar store. For the boxes, U-Haul usually has good bulk deals.

  • Hire Professionals: If your budget allows, consider hiring professional movers. Research and book a reputable moving company well in advance, we can also provide you with some references for movers in the Greater Moncton area. They can handle the heavy lifting, ensuring your belongings are transported safely.

  • Consider Storage Space: If necessary, rent a storage unit for the time being. This will make your move easier if you are closing on two properties at once (aka. selling and buying on the same day). That way, you won’t feel rushed to bring everything out.

  • Notify Important Parties: Don’t forget to update your address with important institutions like banks, utility companies, and postal services. This will prevent any disruptions in services once you’ve moved.

2. Pack Strategically

Packing is one of the most time-consuming aspects of moving. However, with the right strategy, it can be streamlined to minimize stress.

  • Label Everything: Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs in. This simple step will make unpacking much easier and help movers place boxes in the correct rooms.

  • Pack Items You Won’t Be Using: You can start slowly packing the stuff you know you won’t need until you move into your next home. This will save you a lot of time and energy when comes time to pack the more essential items.

  • Pack Essentials Separately: Create an “essentials box” containing items you’ll need immediately upon arrival at your new home. This might include toiletries, a change of clothes, basic kitchen items, and important documents.

  • Protect Fragile Items: Use bubble wrap, packing paper, and sturdy boxes to protect fragile items. Clearly mark these boxes as fragile, so movers know to handle them with extra care.

3.Unpacking

Once you’ve moved into your new home, it’s time to start settling in. Focus on unpacking and organizing in a way that makes your new space feel like home.

  • Unpack Room by Room: Start with the most essential areas, like the kitchen and bedrooms. This will allow you to quickly resume normal activities, like cooking and sleeping, while you continue to unpack the rest of your belongings. Focus on completing one room before moving on to the next, which will help prevent the process from feeling overwhelming.

  • Keep It Uncluttered: As you unpack, keep organized by putting items in their designated places immediately, and dispose of packing materials as you go to maintain a clutter-free environment.

By following these 3 simple steps — planning ahead, packing strategically, and settling in comfortably — you can ensure a smooth and stress-free move. Remember, the key to a successful move lies in the details, so take your time to plan and execute each step thoughtfully. Good luck!
